j'adore ma soeur.

"seated by the wing
a little face inside a ring...

don't grow too fast
there's a lot of things to see.
to see...

i'm so happy just to catch you on your climb."

when you have a sibling that you'd be friends with even if you weren't related, that is a very fortunate thing.

as much tough love as i've given her through the years, as many times as she's been subjected to my short irish fuse, i hope that my sister knows she's my best friend.

she just asked me to go to her university's parent appreciation dinner dance next month. her mom passed away when she was 15.

i am so proud of this kid that i could burst! or at least tear up if my contacts weren't perma-glued to my eyes right now...

"sister of mine.
i'll meet you past halfway now.
throw me a line.
attach a cup and whisper "hey!"

shadow boxin when I heard you on the radio...

one of my coworkers has this book called "the secret language of relationships". you look up your birthday and someone else's and it tells you the dynamic between the two people based on their week of birth. each pairing gives a famous couple to illustrate the relationship between the two. this book is supposed to work for any two people, spouses, siblings, coworkers, whatever.

i look up my birthday and my mom's. the celeb couple who best encapsulates our relationship is..........mike tyson and robin givens?!?! uh oh.

earlier this week i come across a sign. on a church of all places. it reads:
chinese proverb: "if you can't find it within you...where will it come from?"

"don't call it a comeback. i've been here for years..."

wellie weather!

sunday we had some bizarre post-brunch conversation about funerals. what music we would play. i picked "in my life" by the beatles.

rocked the wellies on the commute today. april showers. it's raining outside and i feel like i can't drink enough water.

i want to pluck out my eyeballs from their sockets and dip them in a vat of visine. cigarette smoke at the industry party last night was intense.

wu tang singalong where half my glass of red wine got sloshed down my shirt.

everyone i wanted to see wasn't there.

i wore flats and felt short, which is rare. and nice.

refused to spend money on a cab home. the trains were painfully slow.

get home and there's no dog bark, no chatter or tv sounds or text message beeping coming from the room next to mine.

it's oh so quiet...

favorite.

museum of modern art. chicago. 7/2004. by adeet.

world autism awareness day.

today is world autism awareness day. at work we produce all the ad council commercials for autism speaks. (with my girl mariska hargitay from "law & order"!) one of the senior executive producers here has a son with autism, so it's a cause that really hits close to home.

one of my favorite authors, nick hornby, also has a son with autism. he edited a book called "speaking with the angel", a compilation of short stories that you should buy since the proceeds go to two schools serving autistic children, one here in brooklyn and one in england.

i found this on autismspeaks.org:

"Yoko Ono Lennon will unveil an original work called "Promise Piece" that she created for, and was inspired by, WAAD. "Promise Piece" is a unique work of art, done in a style Ms. Ono has been working in for more than two decades, in which a larger work is broken apart into smaller pieces. The 58 signed puzzle pieces will be auctioned throughout the month of April, with the caveat that they are to be "re-united" and re-assembled when the cure for autism is found."

9-5.

"i don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. i don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. you know, as a career, i don't want to do that."-l.d.

at work i sell stuff. by producing commercials that encourage people to buy stuff. consume. use. want. waste.

but we also do pro-bono work. and i'm now on the "green taskforce" for my company, helping to eliminate some of our resource consumption.

my career is the antithesis of what i studied, environmental science. all that muir and thoreau. wasted? maybe not...

post-script...
many times i wish my brain was an etch-a-sketch. i could shake it up and start over.

"eternal sunshine" style.

get rid of song lyrics, replace with poetry. trade the shallowness of my youth with metaphysics. memorize geography instead of how to properly route an invoice through my company.

april fool.

wake up. turn on ny1 for my cliff notes version of the news. there's a story about a computer virus being sent around. and all i can think of is "hackers". a horrible movie that i still hold some sort of affinity for.

my boss thinks that i'm the "computer whisperer". if something is not working she has me come into her office. then the program opens, the document appears, the dvd begins to play.

i offered to go to down the street to saint patrick's and grab some holy water for her computer, jokingly. she gets really serious and says "i believe that there can't be good without evil. they both have to exist you know?"

since i hadn't finished my coffee and wasn't ready to be chastised for being a lapsed catholic, i just agreed with her and walked out.
