one fish, two fish.

we have a fish now. a fish. a dog. a cat. 3 people. the most crowded space i've ever been in. but in a good way. hard to be lonely with all that action going on.

the fish was karen's office fish. then she got laid off. along with 175 people globally in her company. in a wise ass moment i asked if "the fish had gotten laid off too?" probably not the most sensitive sentence of my life.

fish had no name until saturday. it now has a long, long name which i forget all of. a collaborative effort between johanna and myself. our fish is spanish, we decided. senor estaban... i forget the rest. decided his "confirmation name" would be karen's boyfriend's name.
now it's and endless game of keep the cat away from the fish until we get a top for the tank. the dog also fights the cat. a cat which is more than double its size.

the last time i had a fish was in junior high. a beta fish. won at the st. john the baptist church festival on the north side of syracuse. it lived for like 2 years. my dad and stepmom couldn't believe it. can't remember what i named it. the fish lived high up on top of the fridge, out of the way of their cats. my weekend pet.

i remember loving the rickety rides at carnivals and fairs. these days i hear parents forbid kids from going on them at all. in the 80's people were more relaxed. not so concerned with the roundup ride spinning out of control and careening into the ferris wheel, sending their children to certain injury.

the worst part of being an only child for the first 8 years of life was not having anyone to go on rides with. i'd end up with an adult or getting paired up with whatever other kid was the odd one out. this was not the height of cool. but i guess i never was...

post script...
esteban the fish is named after one of my favorite cartoons. "esteban and the lost cities of gold" is what i thought it was named. the internet tells me it was "the mysterious cities of gold". memory fails me again.
